    Hey all,
    My 1993 Mustang has the 2.3L DIS. I am planning to remove that and install a 351w sometime in 2015. When I make the switch I plan to simplify the car a good bit. Going Carbureted, mechanical fuel pump, manual steering and distributer.

    I need to know what all do I need to run the distributer? My 351w already had a distributer and I am familiar with how to install one, but what about the wiring to the distributer? Wiring to the coil? Just assume I know nothing about a distributer and talk me through this.

    Wow. Positive from ignition goes to + on coil. - on coil goes to ground through a capacitor to reduce radio noise. Coil wire goes to top of distributor. I recommend either the summit distributor or the D.U.I also available through Summit. Comes with instructions. Don't go with a distributor with points. Mallory and Accel are also good. Carb go Holley 750 Double pumper, bigger will bog it smaller and it won't run as good flat out. Buy the Holley carb book or download it to learn how to tune it.

    Weight reduction and the car is light doesn't need it really.

    Thats a bit of a stretch for a street car. Light is a relative term, that shit still is a pain in the ass to turn unless you're already at speed.

    &/or
    'upset' some ppl, ..., possibly, ..., worse still a recurrence of stuff like diet diaries n' the like or similar... ewwww, the memories of male mammaries come flooding back unbidden

    OTOH when it comes to cars surely every gram counts, anyways?

    Not really, my Dart had a 440 in it and no power steering , even with 60 series tires it wasn't hard to steer, eary Fox doesn't weigh much more. Just needs a manual box.

    I've driven plenty of manual steering cars, I know how it works. You know this, I know this. What does the sidewall ratio have to do with it?

    If it's a race car, I could see doing it. Doing it on a daily seems redundant.

    My main reasoning behind wanting to go with a manual rack is that I am a big fan of simplicity. The way I see it, the more things I can eliminate from the engine bay, the better the engine will look and the easier the engine swap will be when I get ready to do it. Most of my driving is highway so, I really won't miss the power steering anyway. The weight reduction is just a bonus since I'll be going to the drag strip occasionally.

    I've done a good bit of reading online and I'm just going to run a HEI-style distributer. (again, for the sake of simplicity)

    You're pretty young aren't you? If you are, your reasoning definitely shows a lack of experience. You will regret it but sometimes no matter what others tell you, you gotta learn the hard way.

    Good call on the HEI setup. Any car I've owned with points, I always convert to HEI. It's worth it.

    Yes, I am pretty young, but I've been around cars a fair amount. I have heard of a lot of people that swap from manual back to power. As you said though, without test driving a manual setup I won't know until I give it a try. I don't plan to ever sell this project. I'd like to pass it on to my son someday. That leaves me plenty of time to change my mind and go back to a power steering setup. If so inclined, It shouldn't be too difficult to sell the manual rack and pinion.

    Don't condemn me for being young and stubborn. Lessons are best learned 1st hand :thumbsup:

    Wide tires are harder to steer at slow speeds, that said much to be said for simplicity, and weight reduction and as a bonus it will help develop your forearms.
