I've never been into car audio but I want a system for my Charger. How do you know what brands are good and which ones are garbage? I don't mind spending some money to do it right the first time. Any suggestions?

do a lot of research, go to different shops, talk to the installers. most of the big name brand stuff is good, but tends to be a little on the expensive side.
and if that doesnt work, Get Bit should be around here soon to put his 2 cents in. he knows what he's talking about.

Yeah I have been looking around on the 'web for ideas. Other than swapping in some speakers and an amp in my prior cars, I really never went wild on car audio before. A great exhaust was always music to my ears.

I assume what you have is all stock, is it not? What are the specs on the current layout and who is it made by? Thought they had a factory sub installed if I remember correctly.

I have the NAV system with the Kicker sub. Pure garbage but I am used to high end home audio. Now if I could just use home audio drivers in my car, I would be all set.

What's stopping you? If you are serious about this, why settle for mediocrity by using the pre-packaged component sets from Kicker or MTX or Polk or Infinity etc?
Take for example the Alpine F#1 SPX-Z18 component set. You realize those are sourced from ScanSpeak who you should be very familiar with if you are into a home audio. That set is what...$3,500? How much is a Scan 12m? CDT was sourced from Vifa who you should be familiar with also.
